Frank treats our entire apartment building as his territory. The hallway outside our apartment, the elevators and the lobby are all his to enjoy… and to protect!
He freaks when he sees other dogs in our building. He’s not aggressive by any means. He’s all bark–no bite. But he thinks the other dogs are trespassing and lets them know.
We moved into our apartment building this summer, and so far we’ve avoided the “problem” by checking the hallway for other dogs before taking him out, picking him up if there’s another dog in the elevator, and scurrying through the lobby to avoid other pups.
As city dwellers we need to be respectful of our neighbors, but we love our dog and disciplining him is tough! He’s absolutely wonderful with dogs on the street, at the dog parks, at doggie daycare, and he has a few doggie friends that he loves to see even inside our building—as long as they don’t catch him off guard. And we know that it’s a natural reaction considering he came from a family in CT with a house and yard…this would not be an issue in the ‘burbs.
Ultimately we’re committed to city-life and need to change his country-dog ways. If only Cesar Millan lived on the East Coast…
